Chatbots Are Being Abused – But They’Re Fighting Back!

Folk ask chatbots the weirdest of things. That's fine of your chatbot is, say, a Dominatrix (yes they do exist). But in customer care or learning chatbots, it seems surprising – it's not. Users know that chatbots are really pieces of software, so test it with rude and awkward questions. Swearing, sexual suggestions, requests to do odd things, and just being plain rude are common.
The Cleo chatbot has been asked out on a date over 2000 times and asked to send naked photographs on over 1000 occasions. To the latter it sends back a picture of a circuit board. Nice touch and humour is often the best response. The financial chatbot Plum responds to swearing by saying "I might be a robot but I have digital feelings. Please don't swear." These are sensible responses, as Nass and Reeves found in their studies of humans with technology, that we humans expect our tech to be polite.
There are even worse disasters in 'botland'. InspiroBot creates inspiring quotes on nice photographs but often comes up with ridiculous rot. Tay, released by Microsoft, quickly became a sex-crazed Nazi and BabyQ recommended that young Chinese people should go to the US to realise their dreams. They were, of course shut down in hours. This is one of the problem with open, machine learning bots, they have a life of their own. But awkward questions can be useful…
Play
People want to play with chatbots – that's fine. You often find that these questions are asked when someone first uses a chatbot or buys Alexa. It's a sort of on-boarding process, where the new user gets used to the idea of typing replies or speaking to a machine.
Test limits
The odd questions tends to come at the start, as people stress-test the bot, then drops off dramatically. This is telling and actually quite useful, as users get to see how the bot works. They're sometimes window shopping or simply seeing where the limits lie. One can see where the semantic interpretation of the Natural Language Interface lies by variants on the same question. Note that you can quickly tell whether it uses something like Google's Dialogueflow, as opposed to a fixed non-natural language system.
Expectations
It also helps calibrate and manage expectations. Using a bot is a bit like speaking to a very young child. You ask it a few questions a bit of back and forth, then get its level. Actually, with some, it's like speaking to a dog, where all you can do is variants on 'fetch'. Once the user realises that the bot is not a general purpose companion, who will answer anything or teacher with super-teaching qualities, and has a purpose, usually a specific domain, like finance, health or a specific subject, and that questions beyond this are pointless, they settle down. You get that "fair enough' response and they settle down to the actual business of the bot.
Engagement
These little touches of humour and politeness serve a further purpose, in that they actually engage the user. If you get a witty or clever reply, you have a little more respect for the bot or at least the designer of the bot. With a little clever scripting, this can make or break user acceptance. Some people will, inevitably, ask your bot to tell a joke – be ready for that one. A knock-knock joke is good as it involves a shot dialogue, or lightbulb joke.
Tone
These responses can also be used to set the tone of the bot. Good bots know their audience and set the right tone. It's pointless being too hip and smart-assed with an older audience who may find it just annoying. Come to think of it, this is also true of younger audiences, who are similarly intolerant of clichés. You can use these responses to be edgy, light-hearted, serious, academic… whatever.
Conclusion
You'll find yourself dead-ending a lot with bots. They're nowhere near as smart as you at first think. That's OK. They serve a function and are getting better. But it's good to offer a little freedom, allow people to play, explore, find limits, set expectations and increase engagement.

The Benefits Of Capturing Your Everyday Experiences

Source
What would you rather do right now, write down the last conversation you had or watch a funny video guaranteed to make you laugh? What about a month from now – do you think you'd rather read about a random conversation you had last month or watch another funny video? These are some of the questions researchers asked in a recent set of studies exploring our tendency to underestimate how much pleasure we get out of rediscovering mundane experiences. Participants in these studies consistently expected that they would not be very interested in rereading a log of an ordinary event in their everyday lives. But a couple of months down the road when the time came to reread that log, they found themselves much more interested and experienced more pleasure than they had expected. This was partly because they had forgotten a lot more of the event than they had expected they would! In the moment, we think why record our everyday experiences, we will remember them in the future and they aren't that memorable anyway. Even just a month later though, our memories of the event begin to dim, the details fall away, and what once seemed ordinary feels a bit more extraordinary.

When Mashups Work - Smash Bandits

Who else played cops and robbers when they were little? I suspect over half of you just reminisced of a childhood experience. This is a theme that's known across the globe. It's probably the best example of good vs. evil since almost every place in the world has a justice system and those who oppose it. This is one of the many reasons why this makes such a good video game topic. Combine this with racing mechanics and I'm bound to love it. Naturally when I saw Smash Cops for the first time I was pretty excited to try it.

I downloaded Smash Cops while it was free for a short period of time. It probably showed up in one of my mobile game feeds since it normally has a $5 price tag. What a great find this was for a free game! If you haven't played it or another game by Hutch the concept is exactly how it sounds from the title. You play a cop who's chasing bandits down. You smash into them in order to apprehend them. There are different types of missions with different objectives so it keeps the game feeling fresh. All-in-all the graphics are sweet, the game is challenging and it's action packed every step of the way.

The Downside

With an intro like this you might be thinking this game is a 10 out of 10 with no issues. While the game is great some have issues with the controls. I don't, but some do so it's worth noting. However, I think everyone can agree that the camera angles/functionality could be much better. If you pull a quick 180 degree turn just try and steer your car as the camera pans back around. It's very difficult to do accurately. Hutch tries to help this by providing an arrow to show you where your vehicle is going, but it just doesn't help out enough.

The larger problem with Smash Cops was the business model. It was released as a premium game with a few IAPs. F2P was popular in late 2011/early 2012 (when the game was being built/launched), but wasn't at the same level that it's at today so I can understand why the developer chose this route. It's also easy for me to criticize after the fact. To be fair, they reached top 10 grossing spot which is something that most developers can only dream of doing (regardless of business model or being featured by Apple). Hutch likely knew the limiting IAP/Premium design might hinder revenues and that's likely why they came out with...

Smash Cops Heat

In December of 2012 Hutch released Smash Cops Heat. From what I can tell it's mostly the same game, but with a few more IAP options. However, when a game doesn't have endless monetization possibilities or an evergreen game design then the developer needs to acquire players as fast as they're churning in order to maintain or grow their business. I don't know the churn rate in the Smash Cops (or SC Heat) but normally this is virtually impossible to do organically and very costly to do through advertising. I'm not sure how Hutch does it, but they've been able to maintain chart positions with the Smash Cops franchise which is amazing in itself. However, maintaining isn't growing. I think everyone knew Hutch was going to make another game. They're clearly successful, but what do you make? Smash Cops 2? Maybe, but fans would expect it to be mission based like the previous version, and you'd run into the same endless/evergreen issues. I believe this is why Hutch created Smash Bandits.

The Endless Running Smash Cops

Like the other titles the name really sums up what the game is about. This time players control the bandit car and are trying to escape police cars and traps. They also addressed the camera issue. It's always behind your vehicle which makes this game MUCH easier to play. The main objective is to drive as long as possible while smashing into as many cars, obstacles or cops as possible to drive up your score. In true endless runner fashion the game also has side missions to give players a sense of progression while they grind their way to better vehicles. Out of the 3 games I've spent the most time and money in Smash Bandits. I like endless runners and I like racing games... but I love Smash Bandits!

Why I Love It

  • Stays true to previous Hutch games! I'm a fan of the game they put out. I don't want them to shift their direction to a game that they might not be great at.
  • Not just another endless runner! Everyone is making endless runners now-a-days but almost all of them involve some character physically run from something while avoiding obstacles. Here you not some character, you're a car. You're not just avoiding obstacles, you're exploding through them.
  • Its action packed! Not one minute of Smash Bandits is dull. There are always barricades to smash through, cars to explode and cops to evade.
  • Beautiful graphics! Graphics aren't everything but it helps that the explosions look amazing. Even with all that's happening on the screen I rarely get any slowdown. I've experienced minor slowdowns but after killing background apps it went away.
  • Boat scenes! As if smashing through everything with cars wasn't enough, there are areas in the map where you smash through a boat house and you're controlling a boat. How does that logistically work? Shut up and keep running from the cops.
  • Challenging missions! You might start with a few easy missions, but some of the later ones are pretty hard to do. They had me trying and trying until admitting defeat and paying $15,000 to skip it.
  • Nice monetization mechanics! There are reviews of people who hate the delay (wanted level) but this is what's making me play the game for so long. Without a delay I would've played the game HARDCORE for a week and would've been done. Want to skip a mission? You can by paying soft currency. There's certainly room for improvement/growth but this is a solid foundation.

Hutch if you're reading this, please release more cars or levels. :)

Word of Caution

Even though Smash Bandits is a great game Endless Runners generally don't typically monetize well. There are exceptions to the rule, but it takes more than pretty graphics to stand out in a sea of Endless Running games. This game works and I think it'll do well because it innovates and expands on the Endless Running genre while blending a racing theme in with it. It's not just another game where a character is running away from something and needs to avoid obstacles.

Mashing up genres/mechanics can be a risky move too. Many times when a developer takes two genres/mechanics they can turn off players from both genres and no one ends up liking it. If you're thinking about making an endless runner (or mashup) carefully study and consider great games like Smash Bandits while designing your game. Are you going to make an experience that fans of both genres will enjoy or are you just going to piss them off?

If you need help designing or fixing your F2P game you can find me here at my blog or on Twitter.

What Is A Canted Sight In PUBG?

Ever tried to use two attachment in one weapon at the same time. "It's impossible" you might be saying. But it's possible now because PUBG has launched a new feature recently called Canted Sight which is a secondary attachment. Read more to know more about it, how to use it, what precautions to take etc.

About it :

Canted(meaning tilted) Sight is basically a new attachment that allows a player to quickly switch between the 1x Canted Sight and the other scope or attachments used. It is a secondary attachment. For now, it is only available on PUBG PC but PUBG might bring it on other platforms too.

How to use it :

The Canted Sight is actually the tilting of the gun at an angle. This can be done by pressing ALT+Right Click or one can change this to his own comfortability in the Settings menu.

In which weapons can Canted Sight be used:

Canted Sight can be used in the following weapons :

Precautions :

1. Following points about primary sight should be remembered:

         I. If you equip Canted Sight only, your primary attachment will be the Canted  Sight.

II. If you equip Canted Sight before any scope, your primary attachment will be the canted sight.

III. If you Canted Sight after any scope, your primary attachment will be the  Canted Sight.

 2. Attaching the Canted Sight might change the weapon's position and view of angle for the user but there will no changes in the gunplay.

3. It can affect the peeking towards left or right.

First Weeks Of School 2018

I am SO pleased with how my students got right back in the swing of things
these first few weeks of
school!  It is very important for students to follow our Code of Conduct, and our procedures (SOPs) because we don't want to waste any of our precious time in P.E. class due to management issues!  The students come once a week for 45 minutes, and each minute is packed full of important learning, playing, exercising and sharing.  Our new PreK and Kindergarten students are also doing a great job learning the expectations.  We are off to a GREAT start!
Sit and Reach Test for Flexibility

Check out what we have learned this month:  Videos are available for some activities!

Daily Dozen Warm-Up - Click here for a video of our September Daily Dozen (Bonus - your child can do this at home!  Check out my youtube channel for more Daily Dozen videos).

Equipment:  Students have played with a variety of different balls, bowling pins, balloons and paddles, scooters, and learned how to clean up.

Games and Skills:
Test Your Skills - Check out the VIDEO HERE!  Students did tons of locomotor movements, animal walks, soccer, basketball and scooters.  I also used this time to test students on the Sit and Reach and Push-Ups.

Rollerball and Pinball - 3rd-5th graders played these games to practice bowling skills, defense, and teamwork.

All students played the Color Run Game and a variety of tag games such as Fruit Loop Tag, Fruit Tag (just like Fruit Loop Tag but talked about nutrition and healthy eating!), Stop and Go Tag, and Bubble Tag.  This teaches them how to run, stop and dodge safely and how to cooperate with others.

Personal Space and Spacial Awareness - All students learned about how to move safely while playing and how to stay in their own space during games and also listening times.

PACER Running Test - 3rd-5th graders participated in the PACER Pre-test

Curl-Up Test - 3rd-5th graders did a Curl-Up Pre-test (video demonstration).

It has been a great month, and I look forward to October!
Showing how we take turns during the Test Your Skills activity.

Goalie

This is how we clean up the balloons by giving it a "half hug".  We clean up the balls with a hug with both arms!
